Pleats can't be really taken out without major surgery, correct? That's what I've read which is saving my wallet from that suit.

basically, yes. tear apart, flatten out front, re-sew
i've had it done before and the pants will never look like true flat fronts no matter how good the tailor, nor will the cost really be justified.
