Anybody familiar with him? Brooks was a popular sideman for Blue Note artists in the 50s. He has a small catalogue of work under his own name but, alas, he stopped recording in 1961 and died about ten years later from heroin addiction complications. I've read several articles on Brooks and it seems he was greatly admired for his unique tone. Warm, almost bluesy...but just not quite blues. From what I've listened to thus far I am inclined to agree. The tone is remarkable, the playing very expressive. For a great example of the tone and his dexterity, check out this "The Way You Look Tonight." Lee Morgan on trumpet. Here is a sexy, slow-burning "Everything Happens to Me": And here's the title cut from "True Blue", which seems to be his most-respected album. If you like jazz, give it a shot.
