If you had a choice...

First and foremost, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jorge and I'm new around these boards. I've read a lot of topics and such here and decided to join so I can join the fun.

So here's my question...If you had a choice (these are your ONLY choices) would you choose Jos. A Bank shirts, or shirts from Macy's (DKNY, Beene, etc.) I'm talking about dress shirts. Remember, these are your only choices because of financial constraints.

I'm in banking/finance and lately I've realized that I started to let myself go, looks wise. So I'm working on changing that. I've lost about 18 pounds so far and now i'm looking at my clothing. Right now I'm wearing shirts from Kohl's which feel like sandpaper, and are almost completely see through.

So, please, give me your opinion on what should I do.

god those are just bad options.

As a guy in banking and finance, one would think you'd be afforded more options.

My opinion, get a few basic shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt or TM Lewin. They are only marginally more expensive, and the quality is pretty good.

Thanks for your response. Here's the thing, I could afford to spend more on shirts, but I honestly just don't want to. I know that's not the motto of the forum here, but personally, I'd rather have 10 decent shirts, then 3 really good ones.

well how about a compromise of 7 good ones.

The ones you find at macys are really rubbish. Jos a bank has some decent shirts, but they are more expensive again. Their lower level stuff is pretty crappy.

I think CT and TM Lewin sell basic shirts for about $45 a shirt.

Agreed. Especially in an industry where you are expected to look good (or at least passable) it is only a matter of time before the Macy's options begin to shred. Look into CT or TM Lewin first.

Also, it is sales season right now at a number of stores. Nordstrom's sale starts on the 17th and you can likely find their 1901 and other house brands as a part of the sale. Again, these won't be overly well made but are definitely a step up.

Don't think that stocking up on crappy shirts for the sake of having more shirts is a good idea. Especially if you are active on this forum it's only a matter of time before your quality (read: spending) threshold expands and you find yourself extremely upset with Macy's collection.

Brooks Brothers should be in your price range, Jorge, especially if you have an outlet nearby. Their shirts are better than JoS, Macy's, etc...

I haven't measured myself since the weight loss. Will do when I get home, and report back later tonight. But it should be around 15.5 - 16 / 32

I looked on the BB website and the shirts are about $80 a pop. I do have an outlet nearby though, how much cheaper are they there?

BB shirts, especially the normal fit ones, are cut big enough to double as a schooner sail.

The slim fit are only mildly better. I had to go to their tailored or extra slim fit shirt to get even close to fitting me...they are HUGE

Come on, those can't be your only choices. Anyway, I don't see why one would necessarily be better than the other to begin with.

Macy's is hardly a step up from Kohl's at the comparable price points. You can probably do better at JCP if you're completely resistant to TM Lewin, Charles Tyrwhitt, BB Clearance during next week's semi-annual sale, or BB Outlet (my local currently has dress shirts at $29.90 each thru the 20th). Depending where you live there's also Nordstrom RACK, Filene's Basement, NM Last Call, Saks OFF 5th, and the aforementioned JAB.

The outlet closest to me usually does 3 for $109 or $129 or something like that for the 346 shirts. I usually go and hit the clearance rack. Depending on the time of year, I have found a few 1818 shirts on clearance for right around $20.

Unfortunately, in my price range, it seems those are my only choices. I'm going to go by the BB outlet and see what I find.
