Scene Breakdown - Cool as Ice

I lived through that era, so I know for a fact that most people thought he was ridiculous and lame at the time. I do wonder, however, if people realized how punchable he was? I wonder if it's only with the hindsight of 20 years- and in light of all of the negative associations accrued throughout an entire generation of rinky-dink T.J. Maxx-clad wiggers- that we can see that his schtick was pathetic and repellant? Don't get me wrong, Vanilla Ice is- as God made him, at least- a pretty damn good looking guy, but I think most sane women would look at his affectations in those video clips and say, "ewwwwwwwww."

It's also worth noting that the '80s ended only around 1992 or so. Up until "Smells Like Teen Spirit" broke through to the pop charts, high-waisted acid-wash jeans, African-motif day-glo colors, and big hair mall girls still reigned supreme. Even the conception of coolness evinced in "Cool As Ice" is unmistakably '80s. Look at the audience in the concert scene-- vintage '80s nerds!
