"Once Iraq becomes a very rich and prosperous country ... we would hope that some consideration be given to repaying the United States some of the mega-dollars that we have spent here in the last eight years," said Rohrabacher, according to the Agence France-Presse news agency.

From the "you can't make this shit up" department.

Iraq invades Kuwait, we have to expel them. Iraq violates the terms of the armistice, we have to invade. Iraq is an unstable shithole, we have to police it for a decade.

We should pay them for the pleasure.

They are allready repaying you, in the form of a higher discount of dollars per barrel then any other country can get. Think 15 to 18 dollars vs max 9 for other countries. That congressman should be better informed.

They probably have the cash laying around to make the payments: $6.7 billion in cash missing in Iraq

The world would be better off if the U.S. became a colonial power. It would suck for us, though.

Somo, the iraqi state oil company.

Some time ago I got sideways involved in trying to broker a deal between a euro refinery and somo for near us discounts. I'm not 100% sure oN the numbers but there is a significant difference between us rates and the rst of the world. The deal didn't work out btw.

Generally, Western oil companies have to pay the market price for crude oil. I've never heard that Western/US companies are able to buy crude from the Iraqis at amounts significantly less than the market price. Unless you can point to a source, I'm pretty sure you are wrong.
