I just got the iPhone 4 and I am in the market for a new set of headphones. I'd like good sound quality and iPhone controls. I'm also leaning towards the flat cable (tangle free) types. Three that I'm looking at: 1) Jays A-Jays Four 2) Ultimate Ears 500vi 3) Diddy Beats by Dr. Dre/Monster (This one I'm actually only adding to the list for the style as I really dont think I'll be giving Monster/Dr. Dre or Diddy my money) Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks!

yes i need these too. the in-ear ones Apple makes used to be great - cheap and awesome sound. now they're like $90 and hard to justify. i can't picture getting ear buds from ultimate ears and not getting the real deal. however im too cheap to get the real deal. i tried some cheaper in ear ones from target recently ("skull candy" I think). couldn't really evaluate the sound bc they hurt my jaw by keeping the joint open
+1 I can not stand the apple ear buds - they dont stay in, and they hurt.
I was looking at the Etymotic hf3s and they looked pretty sweet but I was worried about how deep they go.
Yea, the apple in-ears look nice and I'm sure work well with the iPhone but I cant imagine they are the best sound quality.
I got a decent deal on the Ultimate Ears so I went with that. Should have them today and I'll be sure to report back.
For my old ipod I had the first Bose in-ears that came out (now the IE2 not sure what they were called a few years ago) and the sound quality was pretty good, but I felt that they never got loud enough. Fit wasnt bad with them I'll admit that. But, more importantly, they crapped out on me after about a year of light use (must have been a broken wire or something because when I shake the wire the right ear cuts out). For this reason I didnt even put the bose MIE2i on my list

Etymotic hf3 have served me well - they do go quite deep in your ear tho so dont get them if you have shallow holes

The tightness of the seal of the in-ear headphone will, in large part, determine how good the bass response is. The Apple IEM with the right seals are really great, but the seals that come with them don't work well for me, and the bass response is terrible. Switching to either the Ety flanged seals or the Comply foam tips improves the Apple IEMs greatly.

If you're looking for something cheap, but can compete with $50 in ear headphones get this one Probably one of the best you'll get under $50 (and only $12.99 at Newegg now! - most of the negative reviews have to do with sound going out in one ear, but MEelectronics and Newegg both have excellent customer service and will replace with [almost] no questions asked) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16875996107 http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/...nics-m6-review http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/...-m6-m9-and-m11 http://www.head-fi.org/products/meel...-black/reviews BTW: Unless you're listening to lossless audio or files with quality above 128kbps, very high end IEMs will probably make the music sound worse since you'll be able to detect all of the noise.

Whatever you go with - I highly suggest getting aftermarket foam tips:
http://www.complyfoam.com/
I have the Klipsch s4i and they were decent but with the foam tips they are great.
