Savile Row: the cheapest?

A+S isn't 'substantially' cheaper, but they are towards the lower end amongst the more marquee names.

Off-row names such as Steed, Mahon, Benson & Clegg etc. are cheaper still, while Sims, Connock & Lockie, Couch & Hoskins etc. are even cheaper.

They're still allowed to use the name because they're within 100 yards of the Row. (Of course, "allowed" is a loose term here)

A&S is about £2.3k but I can't remember if that's before or after VAT.

They're 2.55K GBP excl. VAT

As a 40 year Savile Row veteran (client) who has used numerous different tailors -- including but not limited to Anderson & Sheppard, Dege, Huntsman, & Richard Anderson -- it matters little if a house has taken quarters just off the Row. Some tailors such as Fallan & Harvey have never been on the Row ... but are indeed of high quality.

Yes, technically speaking agjiffy is correct, but if location alone deters one, that person is going to SR for the wrong reason. That said, there might be other reasons to avoid A&S; it all depends on what one seeks.

When did James levett close? They were very reasonable.

Perhaps I didn't word it too well. When I meant Savile Row, I actually meant bespoke - I don't really care if it's on the Row or elsewhere as long as they can provide a quality suit.
But yes, I'm afraid price would be a deciding factor for me. At the same time, I am hesitant about spending around £1000 on one of the value places and not receiving a good product...

I was thinking along the lines of benson & clegg, chittleborough & morgan (though their style looks a tad extreme), but let's see...

Anyway, thanks for all the replies.

I spent much of Friday wandering up and down the Row meeting various tailors regarding having a suit cut for my wedding early next year. I did a great deal of research before the day and the general prices are obviously higher for the older, more "established houses" You're looking at £3k and above for Dege, Richard Anderson (the fabric I chose with RA would run at about £3.8k for a 2 piece), Welsh & Jefferies, Gieves, Poole, Maurice Sedwell, Kilgour etc etc. Huntsman are proud to be the most expensive on the Row at £4k+ for a 2 piece. I found the lesser known or "Row visiting" tailors to be much lower in general pricing, Stuart Lamprell (Sackville Street) was around £1.8k, Steed and Stephen Hitchcock around £2.5k (Stephen is the son of A&S MD John Hitchcock).

In the end I had narrowed my search down to RA, Edward Sexton and W&J. My experience in W&J sadly wasn't great and I wasn't made to feel particularly welcome (I am assured however, that this was a blip and that W&J are usually fantastic people to deal with, plus Malcolm Plews is an excellent cutter - the Gentleman I met must have had a long day!) Brian Lishak was a true gent and I'm sure RA would cut me a fantastic suit, but the examples I tried on we just a little to heavy in construction for a wedding suit (but would be awesome for a business environment!). The commission will go to Edward Sexton, having met with Edward and Dominic and gone through some options with them for a good while (and being made to feel most welcome) I feel Edward will be most able to make something just a little bit more special for the wedding.

Anyway, hope these prices helped you out a little in your search.

Cheers

Ash

Another terrible post from you. Norton & Sons hasn't been mentioned yet. Start at 2.9k inc. VAT. Not the cheapest, but they have a youthful flair that appeals to me of late.

Norton was the firm I first researched on. Apparently, according to online reviews, they have been doing a really bad job since the change of management. People have reported that, in some cases, it took nearly 6 months for the suit to be ready and the proprietor even sent an email to all the customers apologising for the customer service.

On the topic of off-Row tailors, noone's mentioned Graham Browne, who from my understanding can make a two-piece for <£1000. No personal experience with them, but what I've seen by them on blogs and such has looked pretty good, and they are also supposed to be quite open to experimentation. Worth reading up upon at least. Google should give you something to go on.

I have heard that, but I've never really cared about service as much as the actual product, and they'll probably be picking up their game a bit if they're had a rough time recently. But yes, it's still a point one has to bear in mind.
