I've been on a bit of a kick watching British gangster movies recently. I want some suggestions. Anyone else into these? I found a couple of lists, so I'll post the ones I've found, but please add comments/suggestions.

Seen:

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
Sexy Beast
Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Croupier
Gangster No. 1
The Long Good Friday

Not seen yet:

Essex Boys
Mona Lisa
The Business
Villain
Love, Honour & Obey
Charlie
Circus
Shooters
Stormy Monday
Face
Small Faces
Brighton Rock
Bronco Bullfrog
Performance
The Italian Job

Any others?

I'm sure Get Smart is going to be the best resource for this. I would put Gangster No. 1 at the top of your "To See Next" list. It's very violent and has great clothes. I would also recommend The resident of Britain, Terrence Stamp is pretty good in it.

I forgot The resident of Britain, I've seen it and need to rewatch it. Also just found "McVicar" too, which is supposed to be decent.

Interestingly, Pierce Brosnan received his first screen credit in The Long Good Friday. The poor Bob Hoskins character (Harold) is an interesting study. Just as his Canary Wharf deal is set to close . . . he cannot seem to catch a break in this looooooooong film. Helen Mirren plays his girlfriend. I saw it upon its release at the Nikelodeon Theatre in Santa Cruz.

In Mona Lisa Hoskins plays another hapless and just-paroled character. Some poignant scenes with troubled characters.

Tommy Lee Jones was good in Stormy Monday. Sting and Melanie Griffith added nothing. The movie dragged thoroughout. If you like quirky, this film may satisfy.

I've seen The Long Good Friday twice now and would watch it again. I would rather have my nap on the sofa in my den without being disturbed by either Mona Lisa or Stormy Monday!

Gangster No 1 was interesting if you're into film and can appreciate an extremely flawed movie with some very good elements. But as a whole, it wasn't very good. Paul Bettany is wonderful, though.

Gangster No1 is my fave Brit gangster film, even despite its flaws (which arent irksome to me at all). The clothes are awesome, Bettany is great as is Thewlis...the plot isnt anything original but it does what it does really well (be stylish and violent at the same time) so it gets huge

Charlie is a good one to catch, as is The resident of Britain

not quite gangster but " British gangs", check out "Small Faces" (pretty hard to find but has some great clothes in it) and "Bronco Bullfrog" (also hard to find but it's avail on PAL dvd)

Brighton Rock - good adaptation of Graham Greene's novel. From the 40's but not too shabby. Scarecrow has it on VHS and PAL (reg 2) DVD.

Performance - With Mick Jagger. Scarecrow has it on VHS and laserdisk.

I loved Get Carter.
Long good Friday
And the krays.
There was a good one in which Harvey Keitel, played an American cop in London, and and another where John Wayne, played a similar role.
Can't remember the names of those films, but they were good.

Lockstock was okay as was snatch.

Haven't seen gangster number one yet.

Not sure if they count as gangster films, but. The Italian job and McVicar, are worth seeing.

Edited my first post to include suggestions and move a couple to the 'seen' pile.

Gangster #1 was really great IMO, though it got a little slow toward the end. Reminded me of Casino or another of the epic Mafia movies.

The Long Good Friday was pretty good, but I must have missed a couple of minutes at the beginning that mattered later. I'll have to rewatch it.
