What is this "Bran king of the Others thread"? Link please.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The skull could be from one of the dwarves with exceptionally large heads that are (still?) being brought in.

Linky - I don't have an acct and saw it referenced on another board. I don't think I buy it, but...

To be fair, the casting of bran in the TV show came off as a lot darker than I remember reading the character...maybe GRRM is trying to tell us something.

After the first book I stopped. Does it get better and should I have kept / keep going?

The third book is the best imo but if you weren't into it after the first then you aren't likely to change your mind later.

I kind of had to power through A Feast For Crows, although there was some really cool shit at the end. A Dance With Dragons has been more interesting, but I still think that Martin could really stand to pick up the pace.

Am I the only ASOIAF fan in the world who prefers AFFC to ADWD?

The first book is pretty damn epic...so if you didn't like it, you won't like the rest I don't think.

first time user, my inner nerd has resurfaced now that season 2 has begun.  started reading the books in the early 2000's when i was 12, needless to say, AGOT had quite an impact on me due to not necessarily being a fairy tale, to say the least.

I do prefer ADWD to AFFC, myself.

and to touch on a few other points

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I thought it was implied in ADWD that the new kingsguard was some sort of frankenstein monstrosity with gregor as a base, i may be wrong, but that's what i got out of it.  they may not need his head or used someone elses or sent a fake one.

As for Bran being the king of the others, i think it's unlikely, however, to bypass the deception factor, if bran could harness the power of the others to defeat all of the starks enemies, it would justify the old gods leading him and training him to do so.  not to mention it would finally put the starks on top after 5 books of mostly getting their rear ends handed to them.  Like i said, i don't like the idea of a mostly innocent character such as bran having to be the master of a dark power, but it could potentially fit into the plot this way.

Thank you, I'll read that (later). I don't think i'll agree, though.

Just finished the series last night, got a couple of discussion questions for others who did:

Do you think the note from Ramsay is legitimate? My first thought on finishing was that it was part of the plot to kill Jon. They gave it to him thinking he would go alone or with just a couple of people, but that got blown out when all those people joined him and they went with plan b, stab him in the yard and damn the consequences. But then, who else knew about Mance and what his plan was? Melisandre? She wouldn't have given him up, would she? Did the queen know? I'd hate to see Stannis dead. Not that I like the grumpy old fart, but Ramsay needs to get killed in the worst pay, and I think making him a sacrifice to R'hollor is in order.

I don't remember what the note is, but i hope ramsay bolton dies a cruel miserable death. otoh i can see him becoming the dark lord of the story

I would imagine if Melisandre brings jon back, it would be more like Beric and less like Zombie-Cat. Beric was pretty normal in red-god-ressurection mode while Cat is a mix of not being able to speak due to her head being cut off and being very angry and bitter at everyone. Jon just got knifed up and would probably act a little more rational.
Cat problem is she was resurrected after she had been dead to long. Beric was brought back relatively fast. Cat had started to rot.

What would be a good deadline for having the next book published by?

somebody should start a kickstarter campaign whose goal is to raise a bunch of money to go direct go GRRM (he probably doesn't make much per book sold...so a few bucks a person ain't half bad).

Set a deadline and the book isn't published by then (or maybe loosen it to "if the publisher doesn't have a final manuscript"), the money goes back to the kickstarter funders.
If the book is finalized/published, he gets a big check the next day.

I think this would rub people the wrong way. It's really a bribe, when kickstarter used in this situation is generally to fund someone who can't afford to devote the time/resources necessary to finish their project. That's obviously not the issue for GRRM (who is freaking loaded).

I finally forced myself to finish A Dance with Dragons. What an underwhelming book. Actually, it may even be a bad book. That's how disappointed I am. Ugh.
