I'm a recent college grad, with little money and lots of engaged friends. I'm looking for a nice suit that I can wear to three weddings and other dressy events. Preliminary criteria are:

  • Dark, but not black
  • Plain or subtle pattern (no serious pinstripes)
  • Single breasted, 2-3 button
  • Modern cut (shorter jacket, flat front pants)
  • 36 jacket, 30-ish pants (I'm going to have to get it tailored anyway, since I'm a small guy)
  • Under $500
  • Need it by Christmas!

I checked out STP and the big name department stores, but it is difficult to find something in a 36. I'd rather not try ebay or thrift stores, as I'd like to get a new suit.

Any help would be great!

try the outlet stores that sell over stock clothes. they often have the small sizes. their prices would be in your range.

Try a local HF outlet. All their stuff is on sale until the 10th

Be sure to get navy, it'll serve the weddings well and you'll have a classic colour suit that works for just about everything else.

Hickey Freeman at Filene's Basement? With a suit sale, it should be around $400 or $450, which leaves you something for alterations.

Charcoal gray would be a nice choice as well. Elegant enough for a wedding, but still appropriate for any job interviews or funerals.

Thanks for the suggestions, all.

I actually have a couple of business style suits for interviews and other situations.

The suit I'm looking for is more for leisure, nice dinners, parties, weddings, etc. That said, is navy still the best option?

The only things that will slow you down are: size 36 and Flat Front...but even that isn't a big problem...

Joseph Aboud makes good looking suits under $500 dollars - found at Nordstrom and Jos. A Banks - as well as many online retailers

Aboud at Banks? I thought they only sound in house clothing.

Since you're a recent college grad, why not get something that's cut too fashionably for business? H&M seems to be the first place most forum members recommend for that sort of thing. Other things that could distinguish it from your business suits are colour and fabric. You don't want to have an obvious "wedding suit" that everyone will recognise from the last wedding, so that could preclude something made more casual by a pattern. I have no idea what you're going to find at that pricepoint, but something with cashmere, mohair, sharkskin, silk, or a touch of polyester would make it more casual. Midnight blue might be too close to black for a wedding, so may I take this opportunity to say chocolate brown is for wedding guest.
