I visited the Borelli shop in Collins St today. They have a major sale on - every item in the shop is on sale.

A quick look at the prices indicated that the discounts seem to be either 30% or 50%, right across the board.

The SA told me that they are closing the shop next February, so I'd assume that this sale is going on until then. My guess is that there is going to be some really drastic Borelli discounting here early next year.

For the other Aussies - what is your opinion on Herringbone?

I went in today and checked out the shoes. AU$700, I quite liked it and apparently they are made in England. Any ideas on the maker? The SA didnt have a clue.

I'm a bit of a newbie to this stuff but what sorta price range are we looking at with Borelli? (pre-discount)

And also whereabouts on Collins St is it?

Cheers!

Pity there's no Borrelli store in Sydney. I might be going to Melbourne in the new year though, hopefully i can visit then.

They're made by Cheaney - probably a better value when on sale.

Of their shirts, the only ones I find interesting are the really bold patterns - I think the plainer shirts are overpriced for what they are.

162 Collins, above Swanston St - if you get to the Scots Church, you've gone too far. It's across the road from the Regent Theatre - as well as Polo RL and Zegna.

Broady, Ceaney make the herringbone shoes. Not bad. But I think best to buy only on sale. My herringbone to discount them as they know me there.

I bought a few borelli shirts last year for $150 discounted at Joe Richards in Brisbane. If you can get them for that price I think that is reasonable value. Much rather a Borrelli shirt than Herringbone. I don't mind Herringbone (when they are on sale though). But I think I would rather a shirt from Ralph Lauren, single needle stitching, split yoke, horizontal button holes on the gauntlet, non-fused collars, sometimes with mother of pearl buttons (always on purple label).

I went into the Herringbone shop in Collins Place the other day. The shirt I tried on was OK, but I didn't think you got much for $200. Plastic buttons, Egyptian cotton, fabric made in Italy and manufactured in Pakistan. True citizens of the world.

The shirt was too long in the sleeves, as RTW always is for me, so I was up for the cost of alterations as well.

If I cross the road and go to Zentini, I can get a shirt MTM in Italian cotton, MOP buttons, made in Australia, for just $240. I figured that was better value for roughly the same price point, so I gave Herringbone the big miss. I was pretty disappointed; I'd heard a lot of good things about them.

Herringbone shirts have some nice bold patterns, but they don't really stand up to close inspection (thin fabric, plastic buttons). For something much better in a similiar style and price range, I'd suggest Cubec on Flinders Lane near City Library.

As for the Borrelli sale...

They were a bit more than that the last I saw, but perhaps they do different lines. Herringbone do have some of the best cufflinks in their price range though. Detailed enamel work on both ends and solid piece.

I hope you haven't cleaned Borrelli out, was planning on going there soon.
