Gingham shirts

Thread Starter
I've been thinking about buying a gingham shirt and have some questions about them. I only found questions about tie matches when I did a search, but I'm looking for some other information.

Are they only spring/summer?
Are they beter suited for dress or casual?
If I'm branching out from solids, is gingham one of the first candidates; or are there other patterns that should come before them? If so, what are those patterns?

I think stripes should be first, but gingham can also be versatile. Other patterns to consider - mini houndstooth, glenplaid, grid/windowpane etc

I love gingham and wear it all the time. It's great for casual shirts but solid jacket + solid tie (particularly wool or cashmere) + gingham shirt is an excellent look IMO.

1) No idea, would not associate them with spring/summer
2) Rather casual
3) Stripes

I just picked up a navy/dark blue gingham shirt.

Aside from wearing it under a suit, just wondering what colors of sport coats and pants they best pair with.

And what is your though of wearing them with a blazer and raw denum jeans?

TIA.

i wear a navy gingham almost once a week. LOVE that shirt. iv epaired mine with a light blue sport coat in the summer, and of course a navy blazer is spot on with it.

and yea. IMHO a gingham was made for dark denim. chukkas or suede captoes FTW.

^pretty much anything but navy as long as you keep scale in mind. I have one that I usually pair with a beige check, dark brown corduroy and a mid grey SC.

Nothing pops like gingham, I prefer it over any stripe or check.

1) No, but be careful outside of those seasons
2) Casual - the exception being light blue on a small scale
3) stripes, smaller white-based checks

I love wearing them with a blazer and jeans. It's simple and easy to wear. Like I said, just put on a blazer and you're all set to go.

Yes to wearing with blazer and jeans. I have a purple gingham that is now my go to shirt for nights out with the wife and friends. During the summer I put on dark selvedge denim and an unconstructed navy or tan jacket. In the cooler months I also pair my gingham with a grey tweed jacket (just heavier, not herringbone or other pattern).

I love my navy Gingham shirt. But if you are in NYC be careful where you wear it too. I wore one out to dinner once at Assalina at the ganssevort park ave, and i literally looked like a waiter. In all fairness they were wearing black gingham but at night who can tell lol.

I do wear gingham for casual wear sometimes, mine is a worn out light brown gingham.
