+1

Feels like all the recent Fed vs. Nadal is Fed does well, but then messes up loses on serve, gets mentally down, misses a bajillion break points, tries to come back, sorta does, then goes down again. Like clockwork. This may be one of the last too.

Did you really think he could do it though? I mean for real?

i think he's capable of it but as others point out, nadal plays such amazing defense, even against the serve, to the point where roger has to put a little more sizzle on it and it forces him into those unforced errors. i think also there's something to the way rafa hits the ball (spin maybe) that roger can't quite get into the rhythm he would like. there's also no question roger doesn't find the angles he used to. even against other players he doesn't hit that crazy flick backhand he could at his peak. it's probably 1/1000 of a second difference in the timing but he's just simply not as good as he used to be. even the commentators pan roger a little because he can't get past nadal but there's a 5 year age difference, and i think that counts for a hell of a lot. i find roger's confidence a bit grating and have a hard time rooting for him myself but i don't think the record would be the same if nadal had to play the federer of 5 or 6 years ago consistently.

Federer eats aggressive, high-error players like Andy Roddick for lunch. Throughout his career, he has had difficulty with counterpunchers. In the beginning, it was Lleyton Hewitt and David Nalbandian before he learned how to play them. Nadal is much better than either of those guys, because he can hurt Federer off the ground in addition to getting everything back. Add fantastic wheels, an incredible will to win, and a lefty topspin forehand that bounces high to Federer's one-handed backhand, and you have a player that is built to beat Federer.

And Rafa's kryptonite? A tall guy with a big serve that can win free points and a high enough contact point on his groundstrokes to negate Nadal's extreme topspin. See Robin Soderling, Juan Martin Del Potro, John Isner (this year's French).

yes, i think he could but he is getting old in tennis years. not much more time left that i think he still could beat rafa.

+1 again. 5 years is a lifetime in tennis years, especially on the legs.
