I'm not too big a fan of in-canal headphones and was looking at the px100s suggested by Tokyo Slim. My only concern with these is their being open-back. I've never owned a pair, and I'm wondering if someone sitting next to me on a bus, plane, or waiting room would be bothered by the sound. Do the headphones give off that much sound to the outside, or is it not THAT noticeable?

another sort of related debate- I'm going to europe for six months (studying abroad) and may do some travelling. I already have a 512mb shuffle, but want something a bit larger. I cannot decide between a 2gig nano, or another (2nd gen) shuffle. Again, it would just be for short rides, trips, walking, etc. I'll have a laptop so its not like im looking to hold a library.

Depending on the volume of your music... yeah, someone sitting next to you will be able to hear what you are listening to. I'd reccomend a sealed can if thats going to be a problem.

The Sennheiser HD205 ($50), or the larger HD280 pro ($100), the AKG K81 DJ ($70), are all really good options

well I ordered them anyway. I'll try them out and if I think it will pose a problem I'll send them back. the other options seem too intense and bulky. we'll see I guess, thanks for the reply though.

Noise-canceling earphones are perfect for bus and/or plane rides. I take public transit almost every day, and my Etymotic ER6i's are the only thing that make the trip bearable. Being on a subway car full of people for half an hour or an hour at a time is generally not a pleasant experience, but with my earphones I can temporarily zone out the rest of the world. I still feel the vibrations of the train starting and stopping, but most other sounds become almost completely inaudible. As for other people being able to hear my music, that all depends on what volume you're listening to your music at. With the iPod earbuds, I would have had to crank the volume to near-maximum to block out ambient noise, but with the ER6i's, I've had to turn the volume down to barely half; anything greater is too loud, and hurts my ears. I've asked friends if they can hear the music I'm listening to, and with the Etymotics, they really have to strain to hear anything at all. So in general, no - a good pair of noise-canceling earphones won't disturb the people around you.

Hmm. I appreciate your respones, however my concern was directed towards others ability to hear my open-back headphones- not noise-cancelling headphones.
