Do you consider yourself to be a moral person?

I realized today that I'm not a moral person. I don't like hurting people, but otherwise have no issue with dishonesty, stealing, manipulation, etc. It doesn't even have to be to further a goal of mine- sometimes it's just tempting to pocket something or manipulate somebody, or lie simply for the sake of lying.

I'm curious about the rest of yall.

No poal because I want people to discuss, no click and run.

I think you should seek elected office!

I follow my morals carefully because I don't feel well when I break them.

I guess there's two steps to this question. Where you set your morals and how often you deviate from them. I set set my morals around average (not religious) and I do not deviate much from them.

I, Sir Humphrey Appleby, lie, manipulate, twist words, confuse, hide the truth and steer events to my own benefit on a regular basis. IRL I only lie if its to keep my private life private or to protect somebody else and nobody else gets hurt too much from it. I lie generate a debate on a daily basis, but people who know me and have half a brain cell can tell when I'm doing that because I tend to get extraordinarily racist and right/left wing. I won't steal or anything, some of my morals may seem a bit contradictory to others but they are strictly obeyed if its a remotely serious matter. So yes, I think I am a moral person.

You are a moral failure.

Saying you have no morals is the get-out of a psychopath or a person who does not want to take responsibility for his duty towards others. In a civilised society, everybody has such a duty. It is what supposedly distinguishes us from less civilised societies or indeed the animal kingdom. Your abrogation of this duty is a failure towards your fellow men and a failure as a citizen. It betrays a puerile lack of appreciation for the consequences of actions - what distinguishes thinking adults from children and is at the root of most behavioural teachings.

Morality is not a genetic characteristic but a commonly accepted ideal people are supposed to strive towards. Denying this is a weak and pathetic act, and circumlocution is even worse, and is deserving of censure and punishment when you get caught. Social codes demand effort. This kind of stuff is a get-out.

There is also a difference between the occasional lapse, and acceptance of lapse as a norm. It's a slippery slope.

If you generally act "moral," what is your motivation to do that?

So people don't fuck you over and to make sure they like you and might want to give you a leg up. Ultimately that is what your brain is thinking when it makes you be moral.

It leads to a sense of equanimity and inner peace.

Morality is becoming filtered out of society as each generation passes by. The "get mine" mantra is slowly becoming the norm. Sadly.

I have the fundamental fallback/catch that I love people. It keeps my actions in line normally as I don't like hurting people.

I absolutely do. But not b/c I think it makes me a better person or b/c I get some enjoyment out of it. It's just what I do I guess.

Morality is a human construct, and is relative from person to person, culture to culture, group to group. Universal morality does not exist. As such, I feel no overriding impulse to behave morally except out of compassion or empathy. In this way, I can be a non-sociopath who is totally amoral.
