Gents,

I submit to those waaaayyy more knowledgeable about fashion than I.

I am going to be wearing a navy suit for an upcoming wedding, and was planning to wear this shirt underneath : http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do...scid=831781012

The shirt looks really good under the solid navy suit, but I am unsure what type of tie to finish it off with. Please advise, and thanks for your help!

I would go with something solid, and cotton. Maybe navy, or even dark brown solid may go well?

You have plenty of options. A dark solid brown, solid forest green, navy solid or with white polka dots or grey cashmere. I think a navy silk tie would look awesome (the Rubinacci) http://www.forzieri.com/usa/product_...ore5=&search=1 http://www.marianorubinacci.net/esho...p?id=92&lang=2 http://www.drakes-london.com/catalog...e/category/77/ http://www.drakes-london.com/catalog...e/category/37/ http://www.drakes-london.com/catalog...e/category/78/ Any would look good, however working out which is best and tying it all together will depend on your complexion, shoes, belt and pocket square Good luck

I think you might be able to go with a gold colored solid tie or something with very subtle striping.

You don't want to get too circus though, so solid color is a safe bet. A dark purple or burgundy might work too.

I would switch the shirt to a solid white...then match up with a patterned tie in reds and blues...

...to me, a gingham shirt is a bit informal with a suit and tie, particularly at a wedding.

Yeah, first thing that came to mind was a knit tie. Too informal for a wedding? Probably. I'd go with a solid white shirt and complimentary silk tie, imo. Gingham is too informal.

I always wear a neat pattern with a gingham shirt. It's busy, but I think it's better than a solid. I wear this shirt and tie combo pretty often:

Similar to this tie, but the neat is a paisley and the center color is light blue.

It's much more interesting than a solid navy suit with a solid navy tie and a light blue gingham, it just seems like you were afraid of the shirt and tried to tone it down as much as possible.

I would not do this with a suit or to a wedding, but this is what I am wearing today in my business casual environment:
