Well, of course I mean the South.

Possum is a natural pest in New Zealand and its fur or wool is cashmere or catmere-like -- I have a beanie in possum which is nice and not expensive.

It appears that a British association is trying to get permission to breed guanacos, in which case the wool likely will be much more common and possibly considerably less expensive.

I have an alpaca summer suit, and the tailor actually told me, when I chose the cloth (kind of dark grey cloth) that is might be less durable than a corresponding wool cloth (I said that I wanted a suit suitable for travelling and he said that he would not recommend wearing it several days in a row, as the alpaca cloth is not that durable). It has a nice "shiny" texture and I feel that the cloth is quite "crispy", but it may have more to do with the way the cloth has been woven than with the raw material.

What I can tell in alpaca sweaters is that the temperature of the alpaca wool is cold and very soft even in hot weathers

My advice is a good mix of merino wool and possum fur from new zealand. It is strong, durable and very warm.smile.gif
