Wikipedia says it best:

The edible flesh emits a distinctive odor, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine and gym socks. The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia.

Depends on the type, apparently. All the Chinese markets around here have them, but after my first experience I'm reluctant to buy another. I can't believe they make frozen drinks and cakes out of it.

In Malaysia, esp. on the street food scene, there are durian icecreams, durian cocktails, and this one drink I had where they mix basil seeds, coconut pulp, with crushed durian and sugarcane juice....tastes unlike anything I've ever tried. The Indian merchants will also add various spice mints to the drink...
