FWIW when I didn't know any better I went out and bought 3 hugo boss suits and that was probably the worst purchase I have ever made. Aside from the lapels being a bit skinny and the lower rise pants, they just feel and are so cheaply made.

Since then I have bought both Isaia and Oxxford suits brand new for under $700. Sure it's not under $500, but you will be better off saving up for a little longer and getting an Isaia from Sierra trading post or another quality suit from Ebay or B&S.

Why are you bumping the thread? You asked a question, multiple people gave you good advice and you chose to ignore it and buy what you wanted in the first place. If you aren't going to listen to people with more experience, why bother asking the question?

Sorry, but black is a horrible color for work and your $450 Hugo Boss suit was a $50 suit with a $400 label.

A $500 suit is a dark alley in a tough neighborhood, regardless of the online forum. So if you get beat up for going there, you get beat up. But let's be as gentlemanly as possible with the mugging. A black suit is very cinematic, but the comment about it being for funerals and evenings out is spot on. My advice: navy blue and charcoal gray and/or a little bit of patience. If you don't need the suits immediately, save your money and buy one suit and spend more money now, then buy the other suit later. http://lordbyronsrevenge.blogspot.com/

When I first got involved with suits (a bit before Styleforum) I bought two Boss suits.

I think they still fit great after all my styleforum brainwashing, and that's the most important thing, in my opinion. You mentioned you work out and I also do. I found the Boss to be slim fitting to people that have some meat on them, not like a Italian made Dior suit that is super slim... a perfect fit. As a matter of fact, I also have the Pasolini model.

One bit of advice: see if you can exchange for a different size if it isn't a great fit at the shoulders and chest. I noticed the Pasolini Boss suits run a bit big compared to other brands.

Good luck and get it tailored at a great tailor. The extra bucks for tailoring at a god place will make a huge difference.

----------------------------------------- Classic first set of suits ----------------------------
Navy suit
Mid Grey
Dark Grey
Charcoal (experiment with shades, 1 darker, 1 lighter)
Charcoal Pinstripe
Navy Pinstripe
Light Grey
------------------------------------------Second set of suits --------------------------------
Black Pinstripe (look for contrasting stripes that avoid suit looking washed out)
Brown (light brown or darker brown, avoid inbetween)
Blues (dark and lighter)
Tan (good summer color)
*Experiment with Taupes and beiges
*Experiment with plaids / windowpanes in blues, browns, grey, charcoal
------------------------------------------Last suits which are rarely worn ----------------
White
Black
Midnight Blue (if you want a dark suit, this one is preferable to black)

As for brands, dont let it bother you the Hugo Boss hatred here. That same hatred applies to just about any name brand milking the public subconsciousness into believing their brand equates to highest quality goods. Many of the same Hugo Boss haters go and purchase equally junk Versace Collection suits or lower end Gucci mostrocities that sell for $1.4K retail but are still entirely fused despite the feigned attempt at handywork such as pick stiching

. Any good suit, name brand or no name brand is going to cost you. A Gucci suit that would pass the Styleform quality control will set you back $2.5K plus full retail. Many here avoid these fashion brands due to their better constructed items costing silly money when compared to generally superior items that are offered at B&S or online stores (particularly those dealing with the less familiar, infinitely superior brands/labels that fuel the upper echelons of menswear with suits, pants, shirts and their accessories).

I will tell you a little secret, a Boss suits kicks the ass off of many branded suits out there - the price and cheap construction is available for under $350 for the thrifty buyer. You are better off here than paying stupid money for an apparently "higher end more familiar name brand" suit that costs three times as much and frankly would not have the desirable construction that would be deemed passable here (a name brand suit costing $1.2 - $1.4K retail is bound to be at best average, at worst junk).

If I were you, If you are willing to double the amount you would pay for Hugo Boss, I would go for BB 1818 line, Canali, Isaia, RLBL, Belvest and run with them. They are a step in the right direction and cheap enough to leave some change for an expresso.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of color of suit would you guys recommend as your "best" one? Would it be good to have a nice black suit for weddings and funerals and that sort of thing even though it's not really something you'd wear to work? Or would you invest in something dark like charcoal that's good for work too?
