MVK's won't play after 6 seconds...?

I download an MKV... it plays for about 6 seconds on VLC then stops working. I then try MPlayer, the same thing happens. I download the same movie from another source, different size / encoding / languages / etc... and try it as well with both players and the movie lasts for about 14 seconds and stops playing.

I have almost 100 movies and have never encountered this problem. Forum tech people: Halp!

Weird... VLC has always played pretty much everything I've ever thrown at it.

I just downloaded a 3rd version of the same movie (Dark City) and it does the same thing. WTF?

What OS?

I have seen this problem occur (happens ot me sometimes on linux but I have seen it on windows) when the audio driver is held by something else. It seems to happen with any sort of video...a flash video on youtube will play for a few seconds and then freeze up even though it says it is still playing (I think it typically starts on one keyframe and then dies when it gets to the second keyframe).

Restarting the sound server/drivers/whatever and killing whatever process was accessing it (or restarting the computer) usually fixes it.

Mac OS X and restarting did not fix the problem.
