Brooks Brothers Madison Fit - size down?

Hi SF: I'm eyeing a Brooks Brothers sportcoat. The site says it's on the madison fit that is the "more forgiving" cut. I'm a 40R in brands with a tailored fit (my chest circumference measures 41" and the shoulder measurement in my jackets is 18-18,5"). Should I size down to 38R? Also, I'm 5'8. Should I get a short size? Any advice would be greatly apreciated. BTW: Going to a store is not an option since I'm not in US. THKS!!

Maybe you should try on Fitzgerald cut SCs. It is slimmer than Madison.

take the measurements of your best fitting sportcoat and use that as a guide to find other jackets. I wear a 39 or 40 Fitzgerald but a 38 Madison (the shoulders of the 38 madison are still larger). There are probably tons of madison jackets out there for you to compare measurements to.

Thks for the input

My jackets vary from 20.5 to 21.5" in the pit to pit measurements (using Harrys/SF method). Anyone could provide me some pit to pit measurements on 38 jackets with the madison cut?

I wear a 40S is the BB Fitz fit, and do size down to a 38S in the Madison. BB has a very good return policy. You can purchase both and send one back.

Won't sizing down result in the shoulders being too narrow? Always thought that Madison, Regent, Fitz fit the same in the shoulders and differ in waist suppression, the height of armholes, lapel widths, detailing...

I would say shoulder to shoulder from the front and the back are more important measurements for you. Will try to get them later on my pieces.

no, the point to point on the fitz and regent are narrower than the point to point on the madison prob ~.25-.5"

Madison 38R
Shoulder seam to shoulder seam from the front: 17.25"
Shoulder seam to shoulder seam from the back: 18.25"

Fitzgerald 40R
Shoulder seam to shoulder seam from the front: 16.5"
Shoulder seam to shoulder seam from the back: 17.5"

Closure: I purchased a Madison fit 38S Sportcoat on Brooks Brothers and it fit me spot on. Maybe I'll let down the sleeves a little bit (a half inch). As I said before, I'm a 40R in most brands with a more trim fit, so I recommend to size down.
