Gym Membership Revoked for Grunting - Page 3

the gym i work at actually has the most irritating guy in the world.... he doesn't so much grunt as moan. he's just a middle aged guy who's doign a reasonably good job of not lettign his body go totally to pot, but his orgasmic moanign with every rep is actually really irritating. that said, i would never ask the guy to leave; we get some really unusual people in, but unusual people are life. Some make noise, some don't.... if other people's various noises in the gym are the hardest part of your life, then buck up princess, cos there's alot worse to come.

I work out a nice club in scottsdale, and it amazes me how socially inept and disrespectful some people are.

Not racking weights, talking on the cell phone while on the treadmill or doing weights, and excessive grunting is disrepectful. If you think otherwise, I personally don't have much respect for you in the gym.

Personally, grunting while doing weights is annoying, disrespectful, and rude. My friends and I always get this incredulous look when the resident meathead(s) at my gym tries to throw up 1,000 pounds (with no form of course) and yell as if he is trying to garner attention or applause.

It's sad. I understand when people breathe heavily when doing weights. That's personally fine. But yelling and making loud noises so that people on the other side of the club can hear is plain annoying. Just my two cents.

'forceful exhalation' is a pretty common strategy. And essential for heavy lifting.

Breathing out at the bottom of a heavy squat is a good way to run out of juice, quick. You have to hold that breath (at least for a moment), as the pressure stabilizes your core.

(this has its applications in martial arts, throwing, lifting, and... tennis?)

I'm an actively training athlete, and I don't think I could manage to squat silently if I tried. And if I did, I would have to take weight off.

I think we can all tell the difference between the people who should have their memberships revoked and who should not. When I worked out during the day at a Golds near me, the competitive body builders would not as much grunt as scream at times. I understood the reasoning, more of a motivational factor for them and their partners than anything else. It is sort of animalisitic, and if you are ever doing some serious weight I would recommend you try it, but in the basement of Golds gym somewhere, not in the Equinox on Broadway in Manhattan, there is an acceptable time and place for everything. Basically if you are at a 'health club' rather than a gym, grunting should be limited to the point that your workout partner can hear you, but that is about it.

The people I want to ban are the ones that use one bench to work out, and use the other to hold their towel. Or the ones that do 10 reps and walk away for ten minutes, and then come back and do another 10 and repeat....
