I only have one Hober remaining for which I have not posted a pic (I am wearing it on Wednesday so I will soon fix that). That fact, along with your tie above, spurred me to order a few more Hobers this morning. I...just...can't...stop...

- Powder blue grenadine fina (surprisingly I did not have a powder blue grenadine...now I will)

^^ Thanks Grad. The shirt is by luxire. The collar is a custom one that I stole from JPHardy, who modeled it after liverano's shirts. I love the way it came out and ordered more already.

i am in the midst of redoing my wardrobe and basically donated all my old suits, ties, and dress shoes to the thrift stores.

currently, i don't wear suits very often... but did get a nice MTO suit in a dark navy.  i have a several custom dress shirts in variations of whites and blues.  i am interested in picking up a couple of Sam Hober grenadine ties to go along with it.  

i was thinking a Navy Grenadine Fina #10 and a Burgundy Grenadine Fina #3?!?  Should I stick with the "default" 4 fold construction -or- go with the 6-fold construction?  because of change of my role at work, i anticipate wearing more suits and will most likely be adding to the wardrobe.  i would just like to spend the extra $$$ to add quality items to my wardrobe.  

anyhow, i am kinda rambling on here.... so thanks for any thoughts or advice!

Navy fina and burgundy fina are both fine options, if they're right for you I don't know, but they're certainly very good. Personally I have the dark red fina, which is dark enough that I'd describe it as burgundy. I chose this because I wanted the burgundy a little richer than the one called burgundy, but I can't imagine I'd have been dissatisfied either way.

How to decide on construction... A lot of people are saying that two 6-folds are equal to three 4-folds and that you're better off spending the money getting three ties as opposed to two when you're just starting out. You'll of course have to balance this based on your own preferences, but personally I'd think long and hard about which construction to go with and then just ignore the price when decided on what's best for you. The difference isn't that great in terms of price and if you'd be happier with a 6 than a 4, that's what you should go for. I can't rationally justify this, but it's how I feel. I'm kind of a perfection or nothing at all type of guy though.

As for the actual choice between 4 and 6... First off neither is inferior or superior. With some of the thinner/stiffer woven silks I've felt that 3-folds were inferior to 6-folds as the knot felt a little undersized sometimes and wouldn't stay as well as a 6-fold (guessing it's the weight). With grenadine's I don't find this at all. I have both 4- and 6-fold finas, and to me they aren't a question of inferior or superior, but rather of just a slightly different character. The 6-fold will be heavier, beefier and form a bigger knot, while the 4-fold will be lighter and slightly more delicate in the knot (though not undersized). I think I'd favor the 6-fold, but then again I'm 6'4 and muscular and get my ties made to 67x2.85, so I find that I like that little extra beefiness so that it's more "to scale" with the length and width of the tie and the slightly bigger knot works better with the width of my shoulders, chest etc.

But as I said, both form beautiful knots and stay locked like a vice-grip once knotted. It's just a matter of whether or not you want the tie to feel lighter or beefier and if you want that little extra size in the knot. But despite having a slight preference for the 6-fold, I'm glad I have both. Sometimes I want a lighter tie with a more delicate knot, variety is the spice of life and all that. My advice is just to figure out if you prefer a lighter or heavier tie, and if your body/face warrants a smaller or larger knot, and decide based on that. The extra $$$ won't buy you a quality-level that would be lacking with a 4-fold, but it might buy you a shape and feel that's more to your preference, if somewhat heavier ties with slightly bigger knots is what you favor.

And yeah, there's no way you're just getting 2 by the way. These won't be your only 2, they'll be the first 2 in an ever growing collection, so you may as well keep that in mind when choosing, so it might be a good idea to go for one 4- and one 6-fold. Figure out which one you want to have a slightly bigger knot and be more of a "power tie" of the two, and get that in 6-fold and the other in 4-fold. Only sure way to figure out which is right for you.

I had 30 or so ties with the famous names, brioni, kiton, zegna, canali, etc. (BTW, the kitons were my least favorite. Tied a teeny knot. Don't know why.) I finally culled the collection several months ago, kicking out the ones I simply didn't reach for any morning. Now I'm down to about 20. I think I've worn one of those one time since. Probably send another shipment to spoo soon. Then I'll order some more Hobers.
