Thank you for your quick replies. I've ditched the Satin navy and also switched the Grenadine Piccola burgandy to this Oxford burgandy (I had a hard time deciding between the Reppe and the Oxford):

https://www.samhober.com/oxford-weave-silk-ties-en/burgundy-oxford-silk-tie-6.html

I think that may look better with midnight navy? This one midnight navy suit I have is killing me -- I love the suit to death but can never find the right tie to pair it with (usually end up pairing it with a white shirt/white pocket square and no tie on casual days).

I'm also now on the fence about the forest green Challis. I can only see it working with one medium navy suit that I have.

I find the idea of wearing a green wool tie with a worsted suit an odd notion, but I am very conservative business dress in my tastes.

Why did you ditch the grenadine? It's a lovely weave.

Silver / grey solids look great with a midnight navy suit and white shirt. A light blue tie could also look good with a white shirt. Replace the white shirt with light blue for less formal occasions and you can add burgundy and a decent amount of other colors to the mix. Hober has a silver / grey grenadine grossa that is lovely.

If you can only see a particular tie working with a limited amount of your clothes, that's a sign it may not be incredibly versatile. It could still be a great purchase, but maybe 2-3 ties down the road once you already have 5-6 solids (my staples would be black, navy, silver / grey, burgundy, and light blue; I'd add a dark blue pin dot tie before moving on to the green solid but that's just me). I think the green wool tie falls in this category and it's probably a better tie for odd jackets or flannel suits than traditional worsteds.

Archibaldleach's reco about silver/grey is a good one for a dark blue/midnight blue suit. This might give you a little idea of how it might look...

Here is the purple/black grenadine that Balfour is referencing (in grossa weave)...

Here is a black grenadine (per Archibaldleach's reco). This is a grenadine fina.

Nothing wrong with forest green tie. Again, here is how it can look (this is a diamond weave).

Hard to go wrong with any of these...

Placed my order and pulled the trigger on these 4:

Burgundy Oxford Silk Tie #6
Charcoal Gray/Silver Grenadine Silk Tie #21
Midnight Blue Piccola Grenadine Silk Tie #7
Navy Blue Reppe Silk Tie #11

Thank you very much for all the sound advice, especially on the grenadine grey/silver as that last pic really convinced me to purchase it. I will post some pics when the ties arrive.
Excellent choices! I'll warn ya, getting some of these only starts a very expensive addiction!

Nice to come home to these (from bottom: Wool Challis Pattern #5, Madder Printed #12, Grenadine Gross Stripe #3, Grenadine Grossa Stripe # 10). The grenadines are standard construction, the other two are 6 fold, untipped, hand rolled.

Very nice indeed!

I debated (with myself) on whether or not to include the grossa stripe #10 in my last order. Based on that pic I am very upset with me about not including it. I should learn never to listen to me when it comes to things like including more Hobers in an order.

I can take a better pic in the sunlight tomorrow if you'd like. I will say, I absolutely love it. It fills a need and the colors are better than I had even thought they would be.

More pics are not only welcome, they are necessity! That said, the pic you have is fine to tell me that I need it.

One thought on the green challis. Challis wool has a very fine surface, not woolly or really woolen. That makes it a bit more versatile IMO.

And always more pics is right!:slayer:

+1. For someone who was a bit apprehensive about wool ties (namely me), the challis swatches were a pleasant surprise but still have enough wooliness to serve their purpose and be differentiated. I've added 3 to my wish list, together with 1 large twill (they're nice enough but don't like them more than the madders) and 4 oxford weaves. Wish list is now up to 15 ties from 7...

EDIT (after further consideration): I plan on ordering my first batch of Hobers this evening. I'm looking at the below: Forest Green Solid Challis Wool Tie #7 (how well would this green work with midnight navy?) Burgundy Piccola Grenadine Silk Tie #3 Dark Navy Satin Silk Tie #5 Navy Blue Reppe Silk Tie #11 These will be my first batch of solid ties in my wardrobe. Are there any other materials/colors you can suggest that are more versatile? These will be paired with navy (medium and midnight) and grey (dark charcoal, medium charcoal, and light grey). Thanks in advance for any advice.
I have his first green grenadine gross a and am looking for another forest green. Would the forest green in wool challis be a good one? Would that be mainly fall/winter wear? He also has a forest green Oxford which may be more versatile, although the challis looks good too.
