Great looking tie and outfit (as always) Pinkpanther !!

A noob question here, what type of knot is that?
I'm working to get my knots to look like yours, but am not quite there yet.

Thank you sir! The knot I use is the four-in-hand (every time, all the time).

For the Navy Blue and Powder blue Houndstooth, does the tie really stand out as blue or does it come off as dark navy/black? I was thinking to get either the navy/powder blue, or the black & white houndstooth, but was worried I have too many blue ties.

I've been reading in the thread and I am about to order my first SH tie, it's going to be two grenadines, navy and burgundy.

Four questions:
1. I was going to order two piccola weaves, but someone advised me to get grossas.
I now plan on getting one of each to see the differences. Are there any other inputs? Are they both equally versatile for example?

2. 4 fold or 6 fold construction? 6 fold is supposedly a larger knot and I think Sam somewhere in the thread said that 4 fold is sufficient.
I would prefer 6 fold tbh, but not sure if that's feasible. The 6 fold further up does not seem to be as large as some people made it sound like.

3. I am attending a wedding and after some contemplation, I am going to wear one of the grenadines there as well. I was going to get a wedding tie, but none of the ones on the website caught my eye or the ones that did are so light that I am at a loss as to what to wear. Anyone wants to convince me otherwise?

4. Width would be 3.5 inches, that's regular correct? Dont want to have a too slim but also not a awkwardly wide looking tie. Maybe I should go with 3.6 inches.

Thanks for any input.

IMO it comes off as a blue tie. Here is a real life pic of the tie from a few months back (please note it is an earlier version of the tie but I believe the colors are the same).

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

As an aside this tie is one of my very favorite Hobers. nod[1].gif

Mine definitely looks more blue than black.

Fellas have expressed different preferences for 4 and 6 fold and for the different weaves earlier in the thread.  If you search the thread, you might find more opinions.  I prefer 4 fold for grenadines, given the thickness of the silk.   But David is a master at pairing linings with silks to achieve the perfect tie, so 6 folds look great too.  Piccola is a fine weave, while grossa is a large weave.  Some consider the finer weaves like piccola and fina to be slightly more formal.  Others think the larger weave is the better way to go since the fine weave resolves to a solid at a distance, while the large displays great texture.  Personal preference really.  I like and have both.  All my ties are 3.5, constructed for a 4IH.

edit: David beat me to it

1. I was merely suggesting you consider it because it is my favorite of the 4 weaves and IMO the perfect balance of texture - weave not too large nor too small. I used to wear the fina weave with patterned shirts, thinking this would balance out the overall look, but now just wear grossas with everything; you really can't tell except up close and by then you're just appreciating the beauty of the tie :) That said, that's just my opinion and if you like the look of the piccola definitely go with that. Also consider that you can order swatches of both to see them in person before ordering a tie. Also, to see the four weaves together: here.

2. I only have 4 folds so I can't comment, sorry. I based this on David (Hober) saying that it was indeed sufficient.

3. Discussed this with you already - so you know my opinion! Interested as to what others have to say though.

4. Opinions on this widely vary; I don't go over 3 inches personally, which is considered 'slim' by many. But this is a function of your own aesthetic, your body type, your collar style (IMO) and the width of your lapels. A 3.5" tie would look quite silly on a very thin guy with narrow lapels; the converse is true as well (again, this reflects my opinion). Ask David and he can probably answer much better than I, I just speak to my own preferences and lapel choices (I actually have varying widths in my Hober's for differing lapels and SC's versus suits).

In general with custom made ties the knots are going to be as you like them.

So in theory there is no difference between a 3-fold, 4-fold or 6-fold - unless you want a difference.

Also a 4-fold construction is typically useful for loose weaves not to add weight but to increase the durability of the back of the tie.

All the four major grenadine weaves are equal in terms of beauty and versatility - but beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

3.75 inches is the classic American width - note tie width should be based on your body size, not fashion unless you are a fashion follower rather than someone who loves classic clothing.

Note the width is based on the size of a average American and this size has been increasing not decreasing...

There are exceptions if you are in shape or do not have a big build 3.5 may work better - truly slim even narrower.

The man himself beat me to it! Haha.

Thanks for the input guys.

I am quite tall and not the slimmest (190 lbs at 6'2/86kg at 188cm), so I think I am going with 3.5, 3.75 might be too wide and I can increase, if necessary, on my next order.
And I think I am going to go with one 4 fold and one 6 fold and then see which I prefer.
As to the fabric, I am going with one of each as well.

Any input on the wedding tie vs. grenadine discussion point?

We are the same height and weight.  I have all my Hobers made to 3.5 inches.

Today's Hober is a repeat and is the Macclesfield #98 (6-fold construction).

Excellent approach to the 4 vs 6 fold and different weave discussions. nod[1].gif

Wrt the wedding, I would think one of your grenadines would be tremendous to wear for the occasion. However, I am not an authority so maybe some others will chime in.

Remember to post pics of your new Hobers. smile.gif

Your tie and pairing (shirt/suits) always amazes me. You should be a tie model! bigstar[1].gif
