Why so many religions have issues with homosexuality?

I've been getting into this new age spiritual stuff, examining different religious philosophies, so that one day I can claim a religion as my own. What I don't understand is why homosexuality is such a taboo in many different religious thoughts. Any idea?

Take Mormons and Muslims, their religions permit polygamy. I reasoned that this is to increase the number of potential adherents, to spread the faith or defend the religion from outside attack. Both religions come down quite hard on homosexuality, which does not regenerate new adherents through intrafaith coupling.

I mean, have you ever actually met any gay guys? They're catty and shallow and narcissistic. Who wouldn't have a problem with that?

True, but who else are you going to get to wear a fabulous outfit to your party? We all have our roles to play.

Polygamy is incompatible with democracy.

I continually cringe at my Christian brethren's theologically unsound obsession with the sinfulness of homosexuality. The Bible inveighs against greed, sloth, civic inaction, and adultery hundreds of times; homosexuality six times. Yet our leadership (at least our leadership that the press puts a microphone in front of) constantly rails against gays, yet is silent on greed, etc....

Off camera though, many mainstream denominations are very tolerant of teh gheys. I'm a Methodist, and I've been to many churches where gays were in leadership positions.

Same here. I know of many music and community outreach departments that would be devastated if they had to fire the gay folks.

Here's the deal. Most religious text were written a long time ago and were not in line with modern sensibility. Some followers of these faiths choose to ignore the texts and accept gays into the flock and some don't. As a religious person you also have a choice which you will follow.

Wasn't Levitican law intended to be parochial for the Israelites? Wasn't it all essentially voided with the new covenant?

The New Testament also condemns one being homosexual.
