It takes a while to get it. At first it seemed like Lou Reed's and Metallica's styles clashed, so I'd hear it either as Metallica songs with odd beat poetry, sprechgesang vocals or else as Lou Reed songs with oddly inappropriate metal riffing in the background. Once you stop hearing them as Metallica songs or Lou Reed songs, though, they become very compelling on their own terms. The best songs, IMO, are "The View," "Pumping Blood," and "Junior Dad." The latter is actually quite touching in an odd way. The only one I dislike is "Brandenburg Gate."
