It's actually dubstep in the truest sense of the genre, in that most modern stuff that people consider dubstep is a newer variation on a very old genre. I agree that it's sparse, and as such think that it suits only certain scenarios. I tend to listen to it at the end of a long day, either through good headphones or my home cinema system, just to really sit back and appreciate it. It's certainly not 'get pumped before going out' music, or 'glorious summer day' music.
I would also give his EPs a chance, as they are
immeasurably superior to the LP. CMYK, in particular, is excellent.
