Can you guys please recommend some beginner premium rums (to drink straight)? I'm in Canada, so Cuban is available, but there are not a lot from any Hispanic countries. In fact, I think my options are limited to the following brands:

Appleton, Arecha, Bacardi, Captain Morgan, Cockspur, Cruzan, Eclipse, El Dorado, English Harbour, Flor de Cana, Gosling's, Havana Club, Lambs, Lemon Hart, Mount Gay, Myers, Pussers, Ron Carioca, Tanduay, Young's

(The full list)

Mount Gay Extra Old. It's lovely. I've been to the distillery. Oldest in the world.

I can recommend El Dorado, Pyrat and Cruzan, in that order. The others on that list I have either not tasted or are just more of the mixing type rums.

I've found Gosling's black seal to be quite nice, but I'm no rum expert by any means.

I'm a fan of Flor de Caña but would only recommend the 12+ for drinking straight. The 7,5, and 4 year versions are all for mixing IMO. Being so close to Nicaragua I see every variety for cheap. The 12, for example, is going for $15 USD. I also like Havana Club 7 yrs. as long as it's the Cuban variety and has the sticker saying so. Their 3 yr is the best mixing rum I've ever had.

I havent tried nearly enough rums, but I hear good things about:

Havana Club
Mt Gay extra old
Cruzan Single Barrel

Not sure if they would be available for you:
Ron Zacapa 23 yr old
Barbancourt 5 yr

Especially with the recent forum fascination with "Gay", I'd like to point out that I'd have a difficult time drinking "Mount Gay, Extra Old" with a straight face.

I think Huntsman meant to say that it's the drink of seamen.

It's fun to sail on a ship with men and sail across the sea...

My favorite topic, as I have lived in the islands for many years. For a white rum for mixing, try to find Don Q from Puerto Rico. It is much drier than Bacardi, which for my taste is too sweet. For good amber premium rums, the best in the world, IMO, is Barbancourt 5-star from Haiti. Drink it neat in an old fashioned glass. This is some of the best shit in the world. Regular Mount Gay from Barbados is a good amber rum as well. Don't listen to Tokyo, he knows not what he mocks. I recently saw that special older version of Mount Gay but have not tried it. I'm sure it is spectacular. Pompano Aniversario from Venezuela is nice. Barrilitos from Puerto Rico, the 3-barrel, is good, although a bit sweet for my taste. I've heard good reviews of the stuff from the French Caribbean islands as well, (Martinique especially) although have not tried it myself.

I was going what was on that list, but good catch. My first introduction to alcohol was by the Haitian side of my family. They decided to bring over a 15 yr Barbancourt with them when they came to visit. Things have gone downhill since.

Oddly enough, I've got a 5 star sitting on my desk right now. Cheers.

Ah, Stu... Begging to differ, but I know very well what it is that I am mocking. I'm sure that Mount Gay is an outstanding (or maybe even passable) Rum. I could care less. I was not mocking the rum itself, I am mocking the name: Mount Gay, Extra Old! Conjures images in my head of: and making out. I don't know that I could fight that off long enough to drink WATER let alone Rum

I'm kicking myself in the ass because when I was in the Virgin Islands last month I had to pass up a bottle of 5-star because I'd already spent my 5-bottle quota on bourbon and Irish whiskey.
