Face it Monton, you're a hippy. I agree though, SC is really, really, nice. Maybe a few miles north and east. . . pretty much perfect.

Wife is the same, but she's a Londoner and doesn't even have the experience of living anywhere else.

Living in the country I could easily handle, but a mediocre town where everything is a little worse than what I'm used to? Not going to happen.

+1

It's London or emigration for me.

Detroit should be in its own Omega class.

Indianapolis is definitely not world class but it's easy and cheap to live here. You have to get out to world class cities often though.

I lived in London once for about 6 months. Not sure if London qualifies as a 'world class city' or not, but I didn't enjoy it at all and wouldn't do it again.

Everything is dull after living in a world-class city. You suffer from structural dissatisfaction: returning to circumstances that once pleased you, having experienced a more thrilling or opulent way of life, and finding that you can no longer tolerate them. Those lists are a joke, by the way. Brussels at 11th, Sydney at 9th? Jesus. Aside from NY, London, Tokyo and Paris, there are no world-class cities, just aspirants who lack either the wealth, culture, or political importance to make it.

It's nice to be able to go to the opera, or the symphony, or a really high-end restaurants, but unless you're making well into six-figures (meaning 500k, not 120k), it's hard to enjoy that stuff too often because it's expensive.

There are definitely other places I could live where I'd be happy, however, they're places with some charm of their own and a different set of advantages, not shitty cities with pops of 200-300k, no culture, and nothing but strip malls and chain restaurants.

Nonsense. The only truly expensive aspect of living in a huge metropolis is accommodation. If you can find a decent apartment (and I grant this can be a large if), you can find and do anything else for a reasonable amount of money. Paris can be very comfortably lived in starting at €40k/year, including regular trips to superb restaurants and the opera/theatre. The principal advantage of huge world cities, in fact, is the absence of a monoculture; there are aspects that will appeal to both rich and poor.
