I didn't tell him to wear a suit.

I said he shouldn't let the internet dress him, at the very least without some certainty that he's started in the right place.

Get one with a turn-down collar instead of a wing collar.

I'd go with a formal shirt as well, but if it's a regular shirt that's white with mother of pearl buttons, you might be able to slide it under the radar. Without the structure of a formal shirt though, you're gonna look wrinkly next to people who have one.

Notice the dorks in that picture with the diminutive wing collars? Don't do that. If you go wing, go full size.

I hate the trend toward notch lapels on tuxedos. It's disturbing how annoying I find this.

He means the height of the collar. Historically, stand-up collars were fairly tall and board-stiff, and were separate pieces that were attached to the shirt with collar studs. The modern variety that comes permanently sewn to the shirt is generally short and floppy, which doesn't look good. Given the options available, a formal shirt with a standard spread collar is easier to do right and for less time, money, and effort.

regular white dress shirt will be totally okay with a DB tux for a prom. but NO to a necktie. get a real bow tie - price will be no more than $30 max, probably available for much less, try buying it from a formalwear rental place. get a REAL bow tie, not a "pre-tied" one - it's not at all difficult to tie one, there are plenty of sites that have step by step instructions and/or videos, it's as easy as tying your shoelaces. recap: regular white shirt OK (point collar only, though) necktie: NO pretied bow: NO velvet bow: NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right. The guy with the turn-down collar gets the chicks. The guy with the wing collar brings them their drinks.

Or get a proper wing tip collar, and enjoy getting to wear a really different collar, variation is good!

Might as well go the whole hog and get an Imperial collar, then grow out a fine pair of mutton chops. That'll really get their attention.

Yes because, wing tip collars are completely unheard of...
