Few of my actual science friends post them, but the humanities types are all over it. The interesting thing about it, for me, is that the IFL "science" is just factoids. They're the products of science, not really "science." The people posting this stuff really have no idea what makes science work, they just like cool shit.

This is why y'alls need to follow I Feel Fucking Indifferent Towards Science.

I remember reading an article at some point about an english painter who happens to be fairly well dressed. His father was something along the lines of a stereotypical British businessman, but was was relatively OK with his son changing course and heading into the world of art.

The only disapproving comment the artist related to the interviewer occurred after he had returned home with the paint spattered clothing typical of young artists. His father lowered his newspaper and said something along the lines of "You don't see surgeons walking home in blood-stained clothes after a long day's work" and resumed reading his paper.

Since then, he has worn clothes that can get dirty, and changed into appropriate clothing outside of the studio.

edit:
Moral of the story being, if you see someone wearing scrubs in public, either they are disgusting people, or their work is not particularly hard core or important (otherwise there would be the potential for gross crap on their scrubs and they wouldn't come home with them).

I'd go with this if they never posted. But they do.

...

Mine used to ask me a lot of questions before trying to get an appointment...

Was quite frustrating...

I only bitch about work on styleforvm.

Note: I'm not a doctor, banker, lawyer, or consultant.

There is an inverse coorelation between how much work someone actually does for a living, and the amount of bitching they do about it. With rare exception the ones in the above group, never are bitching on Facebook about their work. Some of the teachers I'm friends with on FB, seem to make it a full-time job during the summer to post about how much work their job is and that summer isn't a big vacation for them.

This is spot on. It is also the giant Neil deGrasse Tyson circlejerk too.

The Maddox post I mentioned, which is somewhat funny:

Me too. Everyone has to vent and I like doing it among the relative anonymity of e-friends. Bitching to people who know you can not only bite you in the ass later, but kind of feels like a bit of oh, look how important/busy/powerful I am

Note: I'm a banker

I notice the same but I feel like in general they're all very careful about what they post on social media. Only one friend posts pictures of the night sky of nyc on the weekend with something along the lines of "another weekend at work"

I like Neil deGrasse Tyson (or maybe I should be a science hipster and say I liked him back when I was a physics major before it was so cool to like him).

But I like him when he is actually working, not touring the talk show circuit. I mean, I like him on the talk show circuit because he is engaging, but if he spends too much time on the talk show circuit, then he isn't doing science (or at least sciencey things like running the business side of various science organizations).

I feel obligated to point out that this is not Neil. Science is about getting facts right, after all.

He's fine, but he has this weird cult following. When he's on the talk show circuit he creates a lot of straw men about people who disagree with him (Bill Nye as of late too).
