I think some of you guys are sort of missing the point.
This is what facebook is for. Posting ill-informed memes is dumb, but posting stuff about cool travel destinations is kind of what facebook is for. Why is there a photo section if not for this? I admit that some people go way overboard on it, but its a nice way to see whats up with someone. You can see what they've been up to without having to invite them over and sit through an hour of travel slides, you can wax nostalgic over that spring break trip you took with your buddies in 2006 (now even easier thanks to timeline I guess), and you can check back for travel ideas for your own trips. Unlike baby-brags and reams of engagement photos, travel posts might actually be useful to others.
It is infinitely better than people starting their shitty one-off travel blogs and then emailing out reminders all of the time "did you read my travel blog? Did you see my post from this monument?".
Was facebook ever anything more than this? Before the newsfeed and timeline, it may have been meme-free, but it was always just a repository of photos about hobbies (be that going to crazy parties, or travelling) and bitching posts about obligations (school or work).
