It really depends on the state. If the state is a "right to work" state, then the employer can fire you for anything (as long as it isn't against federal discrimination laws).

You knew her? That was a messed up situation.

Last I read in the paper, she wasn't faring well in the courts, but I don't know if that means the situation has been laid to rest or not.
