Nice collection..but does buying shoes just because they are SF approved necessarily equal sartorial learning..or is it simply to appease the SF masses.. and further group think?

What are you on about? He clearly lurked heavily and to maximum benefit and selected things that were to his taste but several orders of magnitude more tasteful than his previous lineup. Someone else might have opted for slightly different choices within the same matrix (I would have more monks, for instance).

Oh my. This is one hell of a transformation, in the right direction.

FTTATFIYL. I came up with a few other examples that illustrate the same point, but they weren't so clothing oriented - and the best used nazis, which would have just destroyed any actual point being made. There are good things to be gleaned from SF, but ultimately pandering to a crowd is pandering to a crowd. To paraphrase Spoozy's sig "Style is something money just can't buy." I make no claims as to why the OP has done what he's done, nor do I pass any judgement on him. If he bought this stuff because he saw it and liked it and it's what he's after, more power to him. However, conflating actual learning with approval seeking behavior is asinine. To OP: Thumbs up. I'm working on a similar sort of "Wow, I have learned enough to enunciate the things I found objectionable previously and address some of my personal concerns" trajectory.

So if I believe that Ed Hardy is an artistic genius and Henri Matisse is no more talented than a scribbling Kindergartener, I'm being an independent free-thinker and suchlike, eschewing the groupthink of the artistic establishment? Or do I just need to take an art appreciation class, because my opinion is badly uninformed?

You just need to learn how to argue, because this is entirely unrelated to the point you're attempting to address.
