sound advice, but if he was willing to purchase more of anything, he wouldn't really have this problem....

Handwashing a set of workout attire takes about as much time as preparing and drinking a shake. There is no excuse not to do it.

this is key... its not the amount of sweat... its the drying out of the clothes right after you work out. so if you're coming home from the gym make sure that the sweaty workout clothes are ringed out and hanging on a hanger in the car on the way home. drying technique - if your gym has free towels (or just use your towel) lay your shorts/shirt on a towel flat, then roll up the towel with the shirt/shorts onto itself- then twist the shit out of the towel. it reaaaally sucks out the moisture to almost dry levels. hang that shit immediately including any towels used. it doesn't have to be in your closet, I have a place in my workout room/bike room with a makeshift hanging rack for sweaty workout attire. plus as stated before just by 5-7 pairs of shirts and shorts... its the reusing of previously sweated in work out attire that causes the stink. so if you're doing double sessions, DON't reuse attire from the morning/previous session.

Depending on what you are doing, washing the shorts every time is probably not a huge deal as long as you are wearing fresh underwear....

Shirts...not so much. Cotton is ok, but polyester will get foul pretty damn quick (a lot of synthetics really suck up the nasty odors). I sometimes do something like others have suggested with some of my bike clothes. I'll take them in the shower (actually, you can just get in the shower with them) when I get home and wash with a bar of castile soap. For a poly jersey, this works fine and it will be wearable again tomorrow if you hang dry with some airflow or use the rolled up towel trick.

In colder weather, I commute in wool and wool can go for a *long* time before it starts to smell...but I am pretty sure I wouldn't want to wear wool to the gym.

I've heard washing works.

Seriously, get enough socks and uns for the week and a couple of shirts. You can reuse shorts a few times. If shit is really nasty either wash or buy more. Not really any other options.
