Dodgers can't make payroll

This is what happens when MLB allows poor people to buy teams. The sale of the Dodgers to McCourt was approved by MLB simply because he wasn't that rich. The owners didn't want another mega-rich owner in a major market who could poac all of the marquee free-agents. This is what they got.

They were cash-poor from the start.

^This.
And, iirc, Major League Baseball took over day-to-day operations of the Dodgers a week or so ago.

But does this mean that MLB gives them an infusion of cash or just manages where the current cash on hand goes. I thought it was the latter.

Didn't they turn down Mark Cuban as a potential MLB team owner? Yet they felt comfortable w/ McCourt. Bud's got to go.

McCourt owned a parking lot in South Boston. He put up a couple of mill, and assumed all of the team's debt. He was never wealthy enough to be a team owner. Cuban on the other hand, would turn any major market team into another Yankees/Redsox in terms of spending power. Bud works for the owners, and the owners didn't want that.

Can we get Team Six to take out McCourt? He single handedly murdered my team.

It's funny, the balances of power in MLB vs NFL. In the NFL, owners get massive checks just for showing up, with the profit sharing and media deals, and players can have their contracts voided for almost no reason. In the MLB, players get huge multiyear contracts, owners can cut payroll as much as they want, and now this.

It's so obvious that an increased revenue sharing model is in MLB's best interest.

He actually put up the parking lot and no cash, and got some cash back at closing from Fox, and has since borrowed another $100M. A perfect emblem of the free credit era. He's been a total disaster - unbelievable to me that an out of town owner with no cash got control of the Dodgers. I think MLB is going to force a sale (if the team can't make the next payroll, it will be guaranteed by MLB and they can use the insolvency to assume full control, unlike the current "monitoring" situation), but McCourt will fight it the whole way and it will probably end up being sold out of bankruptcy like the Rangers.

As a lifelong Dodgers fan, I am glad to see MLB take over as I can't stand McCourt. This team had great promise a couple years ago, but I never had faith in McCourt to do what it took to win. Yes they did well going to the NLCS championship game and taking the risk with Manny, but other than that, the McCourt group hasn't done shit. They let the farm system go to shit and that used to be a huge strength for years. They were only a piece or two away from having a complete team for a few years and they'd never pull off the trade or signing. When they did invest, they invested on over the hill veterans or guys with known injury concerns. Todays team is mediocre because they won't go get any stars or above average players. The biggest free agent signing was Uribe. Too many holes. I just hope that they make sure that Kemp, Ethier, and Kershaw are wearing blue for years to come. I can't wait to get a new owner and see what they bring to the table. However, I hope they are smart and build up the farm system while bolstering the roster with the right free agent signings/trades. In doing so, I don't want to see the payroll get out of control like the Yankees though. I'd rather cultivate talent and invest in the right free agents, than throw money at everyone and hope some of them pan out.

To be fair, McCourt has spent money - his problem was letting Colletti do the spending. Jason Schmidt, Andruw Jones, Manny - there have been some expensive mistakes. Trading Santana for Blake was the real disaster move though - the Dodger blogs were aghast the moment that went down.

just when i was beginning to forget these disasters.

I hate Mark Cuban right now, but goddamn I wish he would own the Dodgers. I haven't read too much into this supposed "Group" Steve Garvey has going, but at the very least Cubes has proven he knows how to invest into a team and make them a competitive/exciting product.
