For the first time in the western textile industry Loro Piana introduced this natural fiber.
I think this will be a new status symbol because it will be produced in extremely limited quantities.
The only available color is ecru (its raw natural color).

Today Rubinacci is the only tailor in the world to work with this product.

Interesting, I suppose... who knows if this is any good or just a niche profit center for LP.

I'd never heard of this before, so I googled... beyond LP's page, there's also a page I found from a producer I think is in Cambodia, with more information on the fabric itself and some interesting pictures. Plenty of Engrish too.

The operative question (except for poseurs) being: Why?

"Wither the Lotus?" Great unintentional pun there.

...the perfect summer fabric thanks to its exceptional breathability, soft and irregular weft, and resistance to creasing. The fabric has the appearance of antique linen or raw silk and is available only in its natural color, ecru.
http://www.luxos.com/magazine/loro-p...s-flower-fiber I suppose those are some pretty good reasons. It does look very nice indeed. I'd be tempted to have a black tie jacket made out of it [:

Sounds like bamboo (which is more readily available)

And also illegal to import into the USA due to the embargo with Burma. I believe, but am not certain, that importing the fabric will be illegal, but importing a finished jacket (finished in, say, Italy), is not.

Loro Piana is petitioning the government for an exemption, however.

I have no idea if the fabric is made in Burma also, but the link above says it's made in Cambodia

Is there a real advantage over linen? Seems like a gimmick.

Most "bamboo" is actually rayon made from bamboo sources. Lotus thread seems to be extracted directly from the plant without the chemical processing. Bamboo fabric made in the same way is extremely coarse, like burlap made from hemp.

This sounds like Russian Reindeermania 2.0.
