National pride is directly linked to military history; this is not my theory. Canada has never had to fight for its right to exist. We have aided other global causes in keeping with the rest of the Western world, yes. This is not what I am referring to though.

I am currently living in the US. Here there is a whole new level of military pride and national pride in general. Canada does not come close.

Also, most Canadian know squat about our country's history. If you polled 100 Canadians, how many do you think could correctly tell you when Canada became an independent country? How many do you think could even tell you who the first Prime Minister was? Yet, how many Americans out of 100 do you think could tell you when the Declaration of Independence was signed or who the first president was?

Poles are very nationalistic, I would say. Probably because of the Russians and Germans, as someone here put it, the fight for the right to exist plays a big part in this.

This is an interesting question.

People away from home are more nationalistic and patriotic.

I would throw out there Switzerland amongst developed countries and Vietnam amongst those developing...

Well, if you're going to discuss Afghanistan then you should consider all the other Central Asian countries and North African ones as well. Libya? Iraq? I think "clan" discussion is common because that's the easiest way to explain specific geopolitical events. I think it has more to do with people making snap-shot judgments when limited information is available. You "assume" that an extended member of your family is not going to kill you if you help them to power. That assumption hasn't played out so well say in the Saddam or Stalin household. Yet, what's more puzzling to me is that in a country like the USA, when information is readily available, the same thing happens with black voters electing Obama. This tells us that people in general prefer to get screwed by one of their own rather than a perceived outsider. I've seen this happening all over the place, esp. in Africa. This is why if aliens really do have superior weapon technology, I'd be first earthling volunteer to screw you guys over ja ja ja.

Genetically? Big time agree here. Afghans and Sudans are way up there on first-cousin and uncle-niece marriages. Add in the hanky panky with the wife's sister and the husband's brother, etc.

Maybe they are nationalistic for the wrong reasons. To this day, they still celebrate the "defeat" of the the Mongols' onslaught in 1241 when the opposite is true. Poles are a joke.

The funny thing is that I've met so many Polish skinheads recently, some even with Jewish surnames, that I start to think these assholes really do not know a thing about their own history.

throw out the scandinavian countries, particularly norway has a very nationalistic streak in it. (cant blame them, carefull planning (and oil wealth) as a country has made them richer per capita then probably anyone else on the planet).

Also, Belgians do have a nationalistic streak as well. allthough to the outside the dont advertise it they will in business prefer their countrymen above any foreigner (and especially the dutch).

The poles have allways fought for their independence against much larger countries, and were divided as a country without their consent. Their rebelled against this before it even became fashionable

Perhaps one of the countries on the Krim could be without nationalism, as ethnicity seems to be more important there. Also, maybe some country exists without a clear cultural grounding (allthough i cant think of any)

@ratboycom

I dont think nationalism is absent there, its just that they are so ashamed of their past that it scares them into supressing it.
