Cecilia Bartoli-- an amazing vocalist if you haven't heard yet. She's more popular in Italy than U.S.

I must add Christine McVie. She was obviously great with Fleetwood Mac, but her solo stuff is also very well done.

If you want to hear the early stuff, listen to her on the Forty Blue Fingers album by Chicken Shack. Of course, this was before she married and took John McVie's surname. Her maidern name is Christine Perfect. No, I am not kidding.

Strength, Clarity, Soul, Control - all there, as well as a mesmorizing stage presence. I don't care what anyone says, there is not a contemporary singer alive today that had as much control of their voice as Whitney did. Nobody who could transition from chest to head voice as smoothly and certainly noone with the vocal POWER and enough interpretive skills to ballance that strength with more subtle singing. Whitney's recorded music never did her voice justice. But, if you listen to her live recordings, you'll hear the sheer brilliance of a legendary vocalist.
Hear hear for all the Whitney fans... Plus I have to concur with the mentions of Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin... Also, Jordin Sparks, the newest American Idol, has tremendous range and the talent to make it into this category... Finally, though I may have missed it, I don't see where anyone has mentioned Diana Ross. Amazing vocals and body of work.

Leona Naess
Lisa Hannigan (of Damien Rice fame)
Feist
Fiona Apple (not much about the voice as it is about her music writing, and I don't mean lyrics, I mean, the musical notes she places on words)
Nina Simone

Okay, this thread is huge. But am I the first on Leona Naess?
