I read your original email as what I suspected it was: trying to get a phone call going because the emails become tedious. I dont think the tone is insulting or offensive, in my opinion.
I'm also not sure why it would matter to you that he spent x amount of money on the shoes. If someone cant reconcile the cost of repair because the value of the shoes is y, I'm not sure why that would matter to the person doing repairs. That should be something that the owner has resolved before deciding on repairs.
