Haha, yeah. That's becoming a serious problem in Montreal these days, no joke.

Hell, al-Qaeda actually recruited a kid (true) from Gaza U. in Little Palestine (aka Concordia University between Guy and Bishop and Sherbrooke and Ste. Catherine).

When did 1234 reopen? I used to go there when I was younger in the late 80s but it's heyday was in the early 80s. It was always a bit cheesy but quite the meatmarket nonetheless. Things slowed down in the late 80s with the rise of clubs on St. Laurent and when Ste. Cath was like a ghost town and it closed in the early 90s I think. (BTW, I lived on Mackay across the street from Gaza U from 94-97).

At least a couple of years.

???

It opened while I was at McGill. It was an old church or something, the building beside Rosalie's. Where was it before?

As for little Palestine... I think there's a terrorist born every minute in Montreal. The fairly middle class building I lived in for 3 years (LaCite) was like being in Beirut... I think they need to get a special task force branch from CSIS in there. Then again, living in Montreal, and especially a place like LaCite, you're probably quite safe from any attacks.

What were some quick suggestions for simple bars and restaurants to check out? And maybe a few nice ones. Suggestions for areas to check out for off the beaten path shopping and food would be nice. Shopping wise I'm looking for stores carrying casual (but SF recommended) clothing and maybe a few nicer stores. I'm 22 so bars and clubs wise I wont be dropping "benjamins" so places interesting but leaning toward a mid twenties crowd would be great to (live music, great drinks, good crowd).

Thanks for all the help, folks.

PS - I followed the other Montreal thread but it seems he's on a much different price range than me.

yea I just talked to a friend and he mentioned beaubien is like the last stop before Jean Talon... that can be a long ass metro ride to downtown man... not to mention it's not a nice area. I'd say $15 cab minimum to get back home, definately more if you're comming off St. Laurent.

With your budget, go to Tokyo or GoGo Lounge. It's the only places where no one really pops bottles, so you will be able to go inside.

I just got back yesterday, and must say Montreal is the shit.

THe whole point of my weekend was to go to the grand prix, so I made it to all the sessions (friday, saturday and the race on sunday). Friday, I met up with someone from another website who took us go karting and a little club hopping. Went to Gogo lounge (wayy to crowded) and then finished the night at Tokyo's rooftop. Went to 1234 on saturday which really isn't as bad as mentioned here.

I definately plan on heading up there again (this time flying not driving) before next year's grandprix, so I can checkout other places without the Grand prix crowd.

The apartment I rented was actually along the Jean Talon stop but it looks like its in the Beaubien area though. It definately isn't a bad area (not posh) as I never felt unsafe and it was a ton cheaper and more convenient than a hotel.

By the way, thanks for the suggestions.
