Well the weather service came up with the idea based on common everyday items that people are familiar with. Everyone knows what a golf ball or quarter looks like but not many know the actual diameter. The weather service assigns a diameter value based on this. Golf ball sized hail is 1 3/4 inch and quarter sized hail is 1 inch. I measured hail from that storm with a ruler and found some over 4.5 inches in diameter. That's the infamous softball sized hail which is some bad stuff considering it's coming down at 120 mph. About the only thing worse would be if it was on fire. That would be the stuff of apocalyptic nightmares. LOL. It's really amazing if you think about how strong the internal winds of a storm have to be to keep something aloft to get that big.
