A relatively unworn pair of Barker Javrons of mine have a hole in the upper vamp:

Barker themselves say they can't offer a "satisfactory" repair and returning them to the retailer isn't an option given how long ago they were purchased.

Not really sure what to do with them

1) Wear until the hole becomes unbearable?
2) Flog on ebay? Although I'd rather not sell faulty goods (I'd of course disclose the hole) and I can't imagine they'd fetch much

Can a cobbler hack together something do you lot reckon? There's a few decent ones about.

The "˜apron' is hand-stitched and for one reason or another the stitching thread has ripped the holes (postal stamp effect). It is possible the holes were a bit close to the edge, and at the point of greatest stress the holes gave way. You mentioned the shoes are quite old, maybe the leather has dried out over the years.

I doubt very much. that a satisfactory repair is possible: however it gets mended, it will always look like Frankenstein's creature: crude stitches keeping things in place.

I suspected as much.

An ugly repair job I can live withn. I'm a broke student at the minute until I start proper work in 5 months. I'll deal with a few unsightly stitches, won't be the end of the world.

Throw them away is the real answer - any repair will be as ugly as can be and you will feel self conscious.

I'll happily relegate them to boozing shoes. Which I suspect is where the hole originated from in the first place..

Good plan, BUT... I do think if you got a curved needle you could sneak it through a smidge behind that and pull it back together.

If I was expecting to get paid for said task, then no.

But this is you at home, worst case scenario back to the garbage.
