So i am curious as to what people say here when posed with a question of how much your shoes cost. Often times I have co-workers/friends compliment me on my shoes and then the follow up question of how much they cost. I like to save face and avoid answering the question due to the fact that I may pay a lot more than an average person for a good shoe.

Today i had a co-worker complement me on a nice pair of boots, and he had asked how much they cost, i told him the price (price being >200) and that i got them at a discount. He replied that he has never paid more than $150 for a pair of shoes, basically thought i was weird. So the question is should i feel weird about telling him? Am I out of place or does he just buy crappy shoes? Do people on SF reveal prices, how should one go about this
BTW i did reply that i'd rather spend more on a shoe knowing that it will look good and last longer.
Opinions???

I tell everyone as much as possible.

But I try and do it subtly - "haha oh you know what I left my wallet in the $2k jacket _ this one was just $1400"

That's classic

this one is just hilarious

Seriously though how do I avoid the answer, without being rude or always saying my shoes are a gift

hmm, something like "A gentleman never talks about the price of his clothes."

It's probably not even areal idiom, but they probably won't know better and most people just take idioms at face-value.

Unless it was a close friend who was asking out of genuine curiosity I would say I don't remember.

I would never flat out ask an acquantice the cost of an item, it's terribly rude and frankly not my business.

I generally don't tell my wife what I paid - even the SF discount to retail!

I'll only talk price of clothing/shoes on SF ... it can serve a purpose here.

In person, I'd probably respond by telling the person that I'm not confortable talking about that subject. If they persisted, I'd tell them point blank not to ask again.

Co-worker: Hey, how much did those shoes cost?
Me: Piss off!
Co-worker: It used to be about the music, man!
Me: I said, piss off! (hurls beer can at co-worker)

Just claim they're Bostonian's, Florsheim's, Rockport's from Nordstrom Rack. Should end the awkwardness right there. And they'll never know the difference.
