Apple is watching you

Apple has been keeping tabs on people since last June by storing every place the phone has been on a local file on the phone. Software has now been devveloped to exploit this information visually. In otherwords, clandestine trips for a bespoke jacket or your favorite strip clubs are no longer hidden from your SO. Vids in the link show the software in action.

Researchers display evidence that iOS 4 records all your travels, again (updated)

By Vlad Savov posted Apr 20th 2011 11:03AM
If you didn't already think your smartphone knows too much about you, here's a handy reminder. A duo of UK researchers have uncovered a potentially worrying (and oddly enough, undocumented) feature in iOS 4: it asks your iPhone to record your location constantly, then timestamps that data and records it for posterity. The trouble with this unsolicited location tracking is that the hidden file that holds the data -- consolidated.db -- is relatively easy to uncover and read, making any desktops you've backed your phone up to and the phone itself even bigger privacy dangers than they would usually be. Some extra digging revealed this behavior has been known about for a good while (see Courbis link below), though mostly by people involved in computer forensics. Additionally, restoring a backup or migrating to a new device keeps the data logging going, which the researchers point to as evidence that what's happening isn't accidental. See a couple of visualizations of the extracted results on video after the break.

Update: The original text of this article was updated to reflect that this was already a known issue, albeit in limited circles. The ability to easily visualize the data is new.

HAHAHAHA YEAH RIGHT. Why don't you come back from planet Justice and visit Earth again? I'm sure if they broke the law, they will just rewrite the law to accommodate Apple the way they are going to do for Goldman Sachs' illegal private Facebook offering. And then AF will chime in about how great it is.

There is nothing wrong with that and Apple did it so they can understand you better and make more apps available to you.

Let's write an app that adds/edits that file with whichever locations you wish. Want to show your boss you were in the office all weekend? Edit the locations file then show them the visualization.

That's it. I forgot to drink the koolaid today.

The scary part is that this is worse than any privacy issues facing The Facebook or Google right now. What's worse is that if an app found a way to transmit this information, the damage that could be done is phenomenal.

I downloaded the app that shows the phones data: http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/ it shows me as having been in Nevada, which I never have. Unless that was before the phone arrived in the store I purchased it from?

This is only worrisome to people who have something to hide.
