A while ago, someone posted a link to an article about attractiveness, which pointed out that being with an attractive woman boosts a man's perceived worth in the eyes of others.

Anecdotal evidence seems to support this, at least in my case. Pussycat is not beautiful but has a very sweet and agreeable personality, which is why I've been able to stay with her so long. All my friends tell me, so what about the personality? you can do way better.

Recently, I met a beauty whom I've started going out with. I've told Pussycat, and she's not exactly thrilled, but she knows I'm being totally honest with her and not doing anything behind her back. The thing is, the more beautiful woman is also better educated and speaks outstanding English (which would be a factor if I were to marry a Japanese woman and return to the States one day, even just so she could meet my family).

Anyway, the new woman would make a far better long-term partner for me, if we have the potential to develop into that, which at this point it is too early to tell. Meanwhile, Pussycat has been a sweet and faithful girlfriend for the better part of four years, though without any pretense that we would ever even live together much less that it would develop into a marriage.

Anyway, it's interesting to be dealing with both sides of this equation at once.

This sounds like it stems from insecurity. The idea that a woman who could have had any other man chose you ergo you are somehow better than all the other men. Then projecting it onto what you feel others opinions of you may be. (I wasnt speaking to you NR directly, just using the term "you" generally.)

I wish you the best in your new relationship since you have been on the verge of leaving Pcat for some time now.

Women who dont think a relationship that doesnt end in marriage is a failure are very few and far in between. As for the slut thing, maybe for another time.

She's gorgeous, tall, has excellent taste, is from a good family that's as full of anecdotes as mine, and could talk the hind legs off a donkey. She's also married.

This changes the outlook.

So much drama in Tokyo.

It may be related to insecurity in some cases but it is borne out empirically and even in some studies if I am not mistaken.

A girl with less beauty in the quantifiable sense (i.e. a little chunkier, or a less symmetrical face) is to me, more beautiful than one who has a very symmetrical face but has personal style that is not to my taste. To be honest it really breaks down to, she has to care about her looks, but not too much. Picky? I know. I didn't know the term "beautiful" only applies to the quanitifiable version.
