Australian and New Zealand Wines

Need some advice from the wine geeks on SF.

I am no expert when it comes to wine, but I know what I like. The problem is, I live in China, where European and American (North and South) tends to be very expensive. The best deals, by far, are from Australia and New Zealand, and I know next to nothing about those countries.

My taste leans towards Champagne, white Burgundies, and reds from Tuscany and the Veneto. Chablis and Amarone are my go-to. I dislike over-oaked, super buttery chardonnays and big red fruit-bombs -- both of which I associate with Aus/NZ. I know there is good wine from these places, but need advice on what to look for.

Any advice on varietals, regions, vineyards or producers?

New Zealand is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc- especially from the Marlborough region. My favourite is from Mud house. NZ sauvignons tend to be quite crisp and fruity. the newer the better, they don't age well as far as i know.

...and that's about all i know about wine. I have heard Australian Syrahs are good.

Shiraz, although you need to like big flavoured reds.

You should post this over in the wine thread.
