Yes-- God forbid that they should not look like a chorus line in rented costumes.

Seriously-- decide what time of day you're going to be married, and how formal you want to be. Then let them come up to spec on their own. It's a social occasion, and your friends ought to know how to dress for one of those.

Informal/morning? Dark grey or blue suit. Casual/afternoon? That may require a little negotiation, but telling them to do the navy blazer thing should suffice. White trousers if you're on the shore in hot weather. Formal/evening? Decide if you're going to do white or black tie, and let them work it out. And so on.

Supply the ties - let everyone else simply kind-of coordinate color (why not navy suits?). Make sure they are nice silver-gold-ish ties, so you all look kind of coordinated.

Matchy-matchy wedding parties look incredibly silly.

Stupid irrelevant statement. At 10 I dreamed about being an astronaut, rich programmer, and a Fortune 500 CEO. It doesn't mean I'll be good at any of those, even though I spent hours reading about it and obsessing over the subject.
