ITT we nerd it up on science fiction literature! - Page 2

I will read anything I can find by the following writers and recommend them without reservation: Ursula K. LeGuin (she's better known as a fantasy writer, but her science fiction is among the best ever written). Iain M. Banks (also known as Iain Banks, but the M. distinguishes his science fiction from his mainstream material) Octavia Butler - fascinating ruminations on gender and identity For a specific recommendation that may interest a scientist (and certainly a mathematician), check out "The Inverted World" by Christopher Priest. What would it be like to live on "the solid of revolution of a rectangular hyperbola spun around one of its asymptotes"?

the "Vorkosigan" series by Lois McMaster Bujold and "Falling Free" Same auth. same universe. the Neutron Star books by Robert L. Forward (the hardest of hard SF) Early Heinlein- later stuff got too wierd for my taste, YMMV. Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation by Asimov- the later books in the series are crap IMO. Asimov's Robot novels "I Robot" etc. The Known Space stories by Niven (Ringworld is one in the series) Niven and Pournelle's "Lucifer's Hammer" prob. the best "end 'o civilization" book I've read. No spoiler. I'll try to think of some more.
